cancun is where it’s at

On the northern tip of Mexico’s south-eastern state of Quintana Roo – facing the Caribbean Sea – Cancun is Mexico’s number one tourist destination and is known all over the world for its spectacular beaches, unique beauty and breath-taking turquoise waters. Here’s 4 irrefutable reasons for heading south this summer…

1. Nesting Endangered Turtles

With turtle season in full swing, Cancun does its best to make sure these endangered creatures have their best shot of survival by ensuring successful hatchings throughout the hotel zone and other beach areas. With an impressive conservation program, 90% of all beach front hotels in Cancun and Puerto Morelos work closely with the City Council and the Department of Ecology to implment Campo Tortugero, a marine turtle conservation program. Prior to nesting season, leaflets reach all the beach front hotels offering advice on how to facilitate the nesting process, what to do when spotting a nesting turtle and any precautions that should be taken. Training information for security and beach patrols are also offered with specific focus on how to differentiate between turtle species and how to build nest barriers to keep the eggs safe. Participating hotels assign a person to coordinate with City field supervisors in every aspect of this program, from gathering eggs into corrals to supervised turtle releases when the eggs finally hatch.

Cancun is set to celebrate the next version of the Whale Shark Festival, taking place 11th – 14th July. Created in an effort to raise awareness for the preservation of the marine ecosystem, the event is specially geared towards visitors, local children and families and aims to highlight the importance of these species and what they mean to the city and the environment. Whale Shark season officially began on May 15th and will last until mid-September. These fish, known locally as Dominos, measure between 15 to 50 feet in length and weigh as much as 15 tonnes, making swimming alongside them a thrilling experience. These bus-sized creatures gather off the coast of Cancun in very large numbers during this time, becoming quite a spectacle for locals and tourists alike. It is estimated that 1,400 whale sharks pass through the waters of Isla Mujeres every year, making the island a hot spot for whale watching.  Celebrations during this event include interactive activities for families and raffles to win tours to swim with these gentle giants.
